Coast Salish
Artist - Spelexílh, Anjeanette Dawson, Squamish Nation
Triangles and chevrons move in a rhythmic harmony, speaking a visual language passed down through generations of Coast Salish weavers. Each form is placed with intention, reflecting the deep mathematical understanding embedded in traditional designs. This piece is more than pattern, it is pedagogy: a teaching tool that holds ancestral wisdom, intellectual precision, and the power of visual storytelling. Through this work, Spelexílh honours the knowledge keepers before her and invites us to recognize weaving as both art and archive.
The Coast Salish are Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest, known for deep cultural teachings, cedar weaving, and carving. The Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) have lived for generations and continue to steward their lands along the Squamish River, Howe Sound, and what is now North Vancouver. Their culture is deeply rooted in land, water, and community. In Squamish tradition, weaving is a sacred practice; each pattern carries story, connection, and ancestral knowledge passed down through ceremony and language.
